if you select not to use Samba 3 accounts you will need no domain.

Ok, I will add a point to the INSTALL file. But I do not think this should go into the package description. LAM 0.5 will support UNIX-only accounts but is alpha at this time.

Another minor issue, it seems that this package is not
compatible with the standard debian behaviour of each
user has own group. Well, I can always create the
group first then the user, but just not as seamless as
"adduser".

This is something I can not support. LAM runs on many distributions not only Debian. If you want extra groups you can create them with LAM.
