Package: ftp.debian.org Severity: normal Hi,
I'm hereby requesting removal of libgtk2-perl, as one of its maintainers, and of its remaining 4 reverse-dependencies, as the last step of a plan that was communicated to the relevant maintainers years ago. The reverse-dependencies covered by this request are: asciio, libcircle-fe-gtk-perl, libdata-treedumper-renderer-gtk-perl, and tinyca. In November 2018: - The Debian GNOME team announced¹ their larger effort to reduce gtk2 use as much as possible in Debian, including "For Bullseye, we are serious about our intention to remove […] libgtk2-perl". - I proposed² a plan to remove libgtk2-perl from Debian and filed bug reports against all reverse-dependencies. In July 2019 these bug reports were made RC. In October 2019, libgtk2-perl was removed from testing. In January 2021, Dominic Hargreaves and I discussed this topic³. We agreed to give the maintainers of the reverse-dependencies a last chance to get their package in Bullseye before migration of new source packages to testing is disabled (2021-02-12), and then to remove libgtk2-perl and its remaining reverse-dependencies from sid at any time after 2021-02-12. We've now reached this point and I think it's time to proceed with the removal: the maintainers of the remaining reverse-dependencies have now had between 20 and 28 months to port their package to GTK3, or ask upstream to. Here's a summary of the status of these reverse-dependencies: - asciio (#912870): bug not marked as forwarded upstream; I filed a RFH in August 2020, nobody volunteered; last upstream release in 2015; popcon votes = 12 - libcircle-fe-gtk-perl (#932220): bug not marked as forwarded upstream; uploaded after the removal plan was announced, never reached testing; last upstream release in 2017; popcon votes = 0 - libdata-treedumper-renderer-gtk-perl (#912874): bug not marked as forwarded upstream; no upstream activity since at least 2016; popcon votes = 12 (which matches asciio, it's only reverse-dependency) - tinyca (#912889): bug not marked as forwarded upstream; upstream homepage lost since Alioth was shut down; porting work started in September 2020, no news since then; popcon votes = 59 Please let me know if you'd like me to take extra steps in order to get these packages removed, since I don't maintain them myself.
