You can debate whether this issue is a wishlist or important, but IMO
there's not been a good explanation of _why_ Debian shouldn't ship
with the pc file that the pcre developers, and the other distros, use.
The reason why it doesn't is that pcre didn't used to include a pc file,
and the fact that it was included wasn't mentioned sufficiently
prominently in the changelog for me to notice it, so the debian package
never got updated to included it. I'm not sure why it isn't installed
automatically anyway without any intervention from me, but apparently it
isn't.
There is no reason why it shouldn't be included, and now I know it
exists (I hadn't heard of pkg-config until I got this bug report) I will
include it in the next release.
