In response to Robert Millan's response (which didn't reach my e-mail): Sparc is big-endian. Transfers to/from sparc from a gftp client on x86 do work. As do transfers to the Mac from the x86 client.
The kind of endianness issue I had in mind was something in the client that assumes that the LSB of a counter (for example) is the first byte, rather than a network endianness issue.
