Given where we are in the release process, that there still seems to be ongoing
discussion on the git side as to how best to deal with this issue and that this

I'll just note that the current state in Debian testing is that "git
absorb" works but git's bash completion doesn't suggest absorb. It does
suggest every git-something in $PATH, but stuff in /usr/lib/git-core
seems to be handled specially (see for example

apparently the commands in git-core are categorized and one can
configure which categories of commands should be autocompleted).
I believe this is another argument for installing git-absorb into
/usr/bin.
