The GNOME project has adopted a new version numbering scheme [1]. Here
are version numbers sorted in order from oldest to newest:
40.alpha
40.beta
40.rc
40.0
40.1

Here are the version numbers mangled so they sort correctly on Debian:
40~alpha
40~beta
40~rc
40.0
40.1

The Debian GNOME team uses gbp's upstream-vcs-tag feature and we'd
like to set it in debian/gbp.conf so it finds the git tag that
corresponds with the upstream version number as handled by uscan (see
the debian/watch file at [2]).

I don't see a way to change a period (.) to a tilde (~) only when
followed by a letter.
