Package: dns-root-data
Version: 2021011101
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

thanks for providing dns-root-data. It's a nice package that eases DNS
administration. I also like that the package does not seem to have any
dependencies, so that it is possible to pull this package from unstable
even to stable systems without risk.

It would be even better if there would be some documentation about your
packaging principles for this package. DNS people are paranoid, so it
would be nice to know whether:

(1)
you intend to keep the package dependency-less

(2)
you intend (and commit!) to do stable updates via
stable-proposed-updates should important changes in DNS root data occur

It would also nice to have docs saying that

(a)
having current DNS root data is actually not THAT important since DNS
servers only need to be able to access ONE of the root servers on startup
to get the complete and really current root data (and thus DNS is ONLY
going to break if ALL information in the root.hints becomes outdated
together)

(b)
it is easily possible to pull dns-root-data from unstable and install
even on stable, if possible with examples for appropriate apt pinning.

This information would make your package even more useful.

Thanks for your consideration.

Greetings
Marc
