Some additional information that might help track this down: several times, I've observed one tab freezing, but the browser itself is still responsive for a *short* time. I can open a new tab, and close it again, and the previous tab then renders as a busy symbol.
I'm wondering if one of the tab processes or helper processes dies, and then that grinds the browser to a halt but not instantly.
