Sorry, Jurij - I can of course just reassign myself :-) Phillip: Kernels do not load modules themselves, rely on a so-called "ramdisk generator" to collect and load modules needed for your specific computer. The ramdisk generator used by default by recent kernels - initramfs-tools - is better than the old initrd-tools and uses udev rather than static lists to resolve the modules needed.
