Sorry, Jurij - I can of course just reassign myself :-)

Phillip: Kernels do not load modules themselves, rely on a so-called
"ramdisk generator" to collect and load modules needed for your
specific computer.

The ramdisk generator used by default by recent kernels -
initramfs-tools - is better than the old initrd-tools and uses udev
rather than static lists to resolve the modules needed.

If you want only the most minimal set of modules loaded automatically,
you may be interested in the alternative ramdisk generator yaird, which
also like udev consults sysfs for its resolving, but unlike udev only
loads the modules needed to reach the root filesystem, and does not
bother enabling drivers for other parts of your hardware.
