As of 2021, chkrootkit and chklastlog do not hang if wtmp and/or lastlog are deleted or are empty
It's possible this bug is no longer present. However, the strace suggests some LDAP files are being consulted - so this could be the same issue reported at https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=600380 (...also being investigated)
