<DEVICE> is what you use in your mount command

Also the complete /etc/fstab.

Please provide more information how exactly the external drive is mounted (e.g. if you mount it via a script, attach the script. If you mount it manually, provide the complete command line) Also, please attach the journal from when you attach the external drive to the moment it is unmounted.
