Well this turned out to be easy. After installing nix-bin and nix-setup-systemd all I needed to do to make nix work was this:
$ nix-channel --add https://nixos.org/channels/nixpkgs-unstable nixpkgs $ nix-channel --update This is described at https://nixos.wiki/wiki/Nix_channels It would be great if README.Debian could mention that the channels will need to be configured, perhaps with the above example.
