It seems from what I see in fontforge by editing the fonts that the "sample" string is legitimate. They are the "sample" field for the various languages. However, from what I see, the sample string in FreeMono.sfd for Russian (lang 1049) seems to be broken. I guess this is what causes the errors you noticed. As a consequence, I propose fixing this bug by only fixing that string. See attached patch (against current upstream CVS). Primoz (upstream author of freefont) is CC'ed for comments. --
