The dialog that firefox pops up is, "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."
If no instance of firefox is currently running, thunderbird will open one with the linked page, as normal. Steps to reproduce: 1) Open firefox (in safe mode). 2) Open thunderbird. 3) Click on a link in thunderbird.
