This is most likely some system configuration issue on your part, there is nothing in the packaging that specifically excludes this combination and indeed I appear to have a system available to me with both architectures installed without problem. You haven't provided any error messages here, a dependency from apt to zlib1g on one architecture won't prevent installation of zlib1g on another architecture so it's not going to be that.
