Hi! A week ago I uploaded all the packages (7.4, 8.0, common, and upgrade transition packages) to experimental, where they are currently waiting in the NEW queue. The upgrade transition package is already available, but not of much use currently. As soon as they are approved, I will send an announcement to debian-devel.
Another FAQ is whether 8.0 and the new architecture will make it into Sarge. Unless the release will be postponed by at least half a year, the answer is "no" because of the following reasons: - The upstream version 8.0.1 has a broken SONAME for libpq. It is still at "3" although it is incompatible with earlier libpq3 versions. I talked about this with upstream and circumvented this by changing the SONAME to 4 for the experimental packages. This will most likely be adopted upstream, but before this is actually done, I won't upload the packages to Sid. - Due to the new SONAME, all packages using libpq must be recompiled against the new libpq4 and tested. Packages linked against libpq4 should be fully compatible to 7.4 databases, so this should not become a problem. However, some packages might fail to link against libpq4. - If the new architecture shall be put into Sarge, I need to prepare 7.2 packages (and an upgrade path from Woody), too. This is not yet ready. If there is a strong demand and I find some time, I'll do it however. For Sarge+1 I can rely on 7.4 being installed. - Many features of postgresql-common are still missing. - The new architecture and upgrading should be tested for a while until I can upload them to Sid. All in all I don't think that this is Sarge stuff. However, I will keep experimental up to date (I also commit to fast security updates since I have to do that anyway for a different purpose), so everybody is welcome (and encouraged) to test it.
