I have tested your unpatched-gcc build on my machines and it appears perfectly usable - haven't managed to make it crash so far. I can still see some backtraces showing up in logs due to preconnect attempts, so applying PR 4790 will likely still be a good idea, but it doesn't bring down the whole process anymore.
