the fonts-texgyre-* packages contain only the OpenType variants of the fonts. The Type1 fonts and metrics are all in the tex-gyre package which, in turn, already merely recommends the fonts-texgyre* packages.
So, I see no reason why the fonts-texgyre* packages should have a stronger relationship than Recommends (or maybe even Suggests) with each other. The LaTeX world will be completely unaffected by this.
