Hi Andreas! By default, postgres' home directory is /var/lib/postgresql, and it is indeed owned (and writable) by postgres:postgres, so something is wrong at your box.
What do getent passwd postgres ls -ld /var/lib/postgresql ls -ld `getent passwd postgres | cut -f6 -d:` say?
