Hello,
Since kernel 5.9 it has become very complicated to install recent Nvidia
drivers.
With kernel 5.8 and earlier it was enough to do :
/etc/init.d/*dm stop
cd ..
cd /home/username/Download
sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-455.38.run
Since Kernel 5.9 I can no longer install the Nvidia drivers directly on these
recent kernels, or I have an error message that appears on reboot indicating
that lightdm (from Cinnamon) could not start.
To work around this problem I must have the 5.10.x kernel installed. Then I
have to remove the 6.1.x kernel from my system and reboot to 5.10.x. After that
I can install the latest Nvidia driver, then once this process is finished,
after the next reboot I can reinstall the 6.1.x kernel with it headers and
finally reboot on it.
I need to specify to the system that Kernel 5.10 was installed manually,
otherwise it is deleted after running the command :
apt-get clean && apt-get autoclean && apt-get autoremove -y
And in this situation the Kernel 5.10.x does not update automatically anymore
;-(
In short since kernel 5.9 the situation has become complicated and I lose at
least 20 minutes each time I have to update this Nvidia graphics driver ;-(
Thank you for seeing what is happening and for trying to lighten the
arduousness of the tasks to be performed to carry out a simple update of these
drivers...
There is another problem when you want to resoft a machine using the advanced
options of the Debian installer and you select the kernel from Backports 6 or
higher (with firmware and headers). Theoretically, this should support an Intel
AX201 Wifi card and provide access to the local network as well as the
Internet. But unfortunately, it doesn't work, the Backport kernel installs
correctly, but recent hardware (Intel AX201) is not recognized when it should
be and no network or internet access is possible on my laptop Dell 9520.
