I'd say it is impossible that it was the bridge-utils change, could you have a look at what had changed from the last reboot to this one? If you have a look at bugs.debian.org/1029445 you can see a diff for upstream changes, it hasn't changed much from 1.7 to 1.7.1, and the changes are just mostly cosmetic or packaging changes, just that.
