pepper has a FTBFS in Debian unstable / bookworm (#984287) which seems to be mostly due to stricter GCC (basically -Wimplicit-fallthrough). While this is a somewhat minor fix, I doubt it will be merged upstream, which hasn't seen a single commit in over 6 years: https://github.com/jgehring/pepper/commits/master I do not wish to institute a Debian-specific fork of Pepper, and I believe this package is best retired from Debian. At first I thought, "oh there aren't that many alternatives for pepper", but then I went down that rabbit hole and found a whopping 13 programs doing something similar, with a handful actually packaged in Debian. Here's what I found, more or less by relevance: # Packaged in Debian: * git-sizer: https://github.com/github/git-sizer Shows large files, history depth, big objects. * git-quick-stats: https://git-quick-stats.sh/ "Simple way to access various statistics in git repository". Probably the best replacement, but command line only. * gitinspector: https://github.com/ejwa/gitinspector "statistical analysis tool". looks really promising, packaged in Debian. # Not packaged in Debian * git-metrics: https://github.com/Praqma/git-metrics "analyse another git repository for metrics such as lead time and open branches". Not packaged, Python. * hercules: https://github.com/src-d/hercules "advanced insights from Git repository history". not packged in Debian (src:hercules is http://www.hercules-390.eu/, not this). * git-stats: https://github.com/IonicaBizau/git-stats "Local git statistics including GitHub-like contributions calendars." HTML/Javascript. Not packaged in Debian. * git_stats: https://github.com/tomgi/git_stats "git repository statistics generator", unclear how it differs from the above. Ruby. Not packaged in Debian. * gitstats: https://github.com/hoxu/gitstats "statistics generator", actually pretty similar to Pepper, mostly abandoned, not packaged in Debian. * repostat: https://github.com/vifactor/repostat Fork of gitstats, same. * git-bars: https://github.com/knadh/git-bars "render a simple git commit activity bars on the terminal" * git-hours: https://github.com/kimmobrunfeldt/git-hours "Estimate time spent on a git repository." Not packaged in Debian (NPM/JS). * fornalder: https://github.com/hpjansson/fornalder Shows commit threads over long periods of history (think decades). Not packaged in Debian. Used to make: https://hpjansson.org/blag/2020/12/16/on-the-graying-of-gnome/ * this thing: https://jpalmer.dev/2021/05/interactive-git-history/ Not sure if this can be called a replacement, as it's highly specific to analysing git itself. Phew! Anyways, please remove this package. :)
