No, indeed. And the `sse2-support` package is the embodiment of this fact. There's a fairly good reason why SSE2 is not a requirement: The Debian i386 port's /raison d'être/ is to support those i386 CPUs which don't also support x86-64, so it's focused on supporting old CPUs.
