Do other curses applications cause problems? Mutt for example?

Maybe it it a kernel problem with your ptys. Does closing all your
terminals fix anything? Restarting X? Rebooting? At a bit of a loss as
to why you're having problems. You could try debian-users list. 

I'll keep this bug open for a bit until you find out if you have a
generic problem with your system or if it is something breaking due to a
new upload.
