(I can imagine either or anything in between) In short: the game remains playable in English-language, but becomes practically unusable in other supported locales (ja, ko, zh, zh_TW). For affected locales, a (non-fatal) error prompt appears and in-game text is absent. Empty labels appear wherever menu/game text is expected, and error messages of the following form are output to stdout: ERROR: FontEngine: Invalid font 'font_<type>'. No fallback available. Workaround: As Andreas mentions, an otf font variant exist. The game does correctly load and display fonts from this file when the symlink is updated to point to that file. Also note: The package 'cataclysm-dda-data' was similarly affected; see bug #1022269 for details.
