On IRC you later mentioned you duplicated the problem with a smaller set of packages installed. It would be helpful to know what precisely the packages are. Note that emacs-goodies-el is just a dependency package that brings in a bunch of "elpa-*" packages, so it doesn't really make sense that (as I thought I understood you say), only the "emacs-*" packages from the list were installed. d
