Please try to duplicate the problem with "emacs -q". I suspect there is either some obsolete/broken third party package or just some personal configuration causing this problem. I could not find gnus-carpal anywhere in current debian sources aside from xemacs21-packages. So I guess checking if some xemacs21 things are also installed would be worthwhile. Thanks! David
