Package: tor Version: 0.1.0.17-1 Severity: normal Tor fails to create its pidfile. I tracked this down. It's because tor runs as an unprivileged user (such as debian-tor), but that user does not have permission to write to /var/run/tor, which is owned by root.
Changing the ownership of /var/run/tor fixed the problem. Purging and reinstalling gave me a /var/run/tor with correct permissions. This, therefore, seems to be a problem with upgrades from older versions of the package. Some older version of the package ended up with a version of /var/run/tor with bad perms, and upgrading to a later version retains the problem without fixing it. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (499, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15-1-686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages tor depends on: ii adduser 3.87 Add and remove users and groups ii libc6 2.3.6-7 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libevent1 1.1a-1 An asynchronous event notification ii libssl0.9.8 0.9.8a-8 SSL shared libraries ii tsocks 1.8beta5-2 transparent network access through ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3-11 compression library - runtime Versions of packages tor recommends: ii privoxy 3.0.3-2-1 Privacy enhancing HTTP Proxy ii socat 1.4.3.1-1 multipurpose relay for bidirection -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
