we have worked on this on the arctica-greeter upstream side, although we don't (yet) honour x-session-manager symlinking. This would still be a needed patch in arctica-greeter upstream.
I will upload arctica-greeter's latest version to unstable (and thus testing) soon, so we can proceed from there improving this issue.
