I agree. As a workaround, I figured I could try the "Options > Use External Player" setting. This does cause a pop-up that says, "Start your media-player with the following url, now: http://localhost:32214". I thought I was in like flint, using XMMS to play that URL (using Play > Play Location) but XMMS complained with "Couldn't connect to host localhost:32214". Indeed, "telnet localhost 32214" returned Connection Refused. Seems lastfm isn't binding to that port. Guess you can clone this bug and treat this paragraph as a separate bug. A workaround that works is to use Options > Settings > System > System > OSS. But then I have to run "esdctl off" whenever I switch from XMMS to lastfm. Awkward, but it works. Anyway, just discovered lastfm today on Slashdot. Wonderful stuff.
