Don't know how to do it though. If you're truly positive that direct access to magic is a big no-no, then I'd suggest getting php maintainers in the loop and discussing the issue with them. By its very definition, an incompatible change is... well... incompatible ;-) and a workaround might turn out to be unnecessary.
