Which desktop are you using? xdg-desktop-portal-gnome is the preferred portal backend for GNOME and you need a portal backend installed. There are important improvements we need in xdg-desktop-portal-gnome 46 but this is blocked on getting GNOME Shell 46 into Unstable (and Testing) which we expect to happen soon after the 32-bit time_t transition is resolved.
