I can verify that the version currently in trixie does not show this behaviour anymore (maximum allocated memory is now below 1 GB). Therefore I'm closing this bug myself. (It would have been interesting maybe to know in which version it was fixed and how, but I'll leave that to bug archeologists). Thanks.
