Also running via aptitude. Just suddenly happened; has never happened
before.
Configuration file `/etc/X11/fs/config'
==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.
==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : background this process to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** config (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ? Z
Don't forget to foreground (`fg') this process when you're done !

And a decided simple strace of me pressing Z:

write(2, " ==> Package distributor has shi"..., 57) = 57
write(2, " What would you like to do abo"..., 285) = 285

write(2, "*** config (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [defaul"..., 39) = 39
read(0, <unfinished ...>
Process 3743 detached
Might just be me, but that PID being killed looks, ummm, a tad bit
funny.
Hitting Control-C, then running 'g' again in aptitude.... Same thing.
Control-C twice (killing aptitude as well), then starting aptitude
over... same thing. Killing dpkg, aptitude, exiting su, closing the
xterm, starting over in a new xterm: same thing.
