Dear kernel team: this would make it a little easier for hibernate
people to insure the sanity of our users. Maybe such a sentinel file
could also come in handy for others. Please consider.

Exactly. The kernel-patch-suspend2 is also thoroughly broken right
now.

I would be in favour. Have a kernel image touch a file in /var/run;
the directory gets cleared on reboot anyway.
