I tried to contact the current package maintainer in December, but did not get any reply (seems to be inactive in general for 1+ year).
Raised another bug report via the "reportbug" utility, marking it as orphaned in the WNPP repo... maybe this leads to a more up to date version, which helps other users as well.
It took me a while myself to actually learn about it being that terribly outdated, and that the latest version has some much needed performance improvements.

Let's see how it goes :) I guess for the time being power users will have to compile from source, until this has been addressed in the repositories.
