Heya, I think you can now close this bug. :)
I completely uninstalled mysql, incl. mysql-client, mysql-server, mysql-common, libmysqlclient12, php4-mysql, etc. I had done this before, except this time I also removed the /var/lib/mysql directory. I then reinstalled all of these packages and it all worked perfectly! I couldn't believe it. Perhaps some file in the /var/lib/mysql directory got corrupt. I'm not sure how I got it working but I'm just glad that it does. Hopefully now I won't break anything by installing Django, fingers crossed! Thanks for all your help.
