With the update of gsfonts-x11 to version 0.19.0.1 the problem disapperead. Here is the relevant part of the changelog:
* Rebuild with the latest debhelper so that update-fonts-dir gets called
with --x11r7-layout and fonts are registered properly to the X server.

I think that the bug report can be closed if this fixed the problem for all
the other guys too
