Hi, Can you still reproduce this problem in sarge?
I am currently using a machine without multimedia keys as well, so I was able to test this (using sid). I set the mapping to a function key using gnome-keybinding-properties and it works just fine with xmms and the plugin. By the way: I noticed that the xev output you attached actually does not contain any useful information (just SHIFT keyrelease and some mouse movement). So if you still have this problem, please attach proper information.
