Upstream silently fixed the bug, not from the invocation end, but from
the end of the tool being invoked, in this commit 2 weeks ago, without
tagging a release yet:

For our corporate users, we've been packaging a wrapper around
/usr/bin/pkcs11-register for a while already, which I've extended to
just attempt both invocation flavors, whichever works.
Note this is an obscure but severe issue for smartcard NSS integration.
