With ndiswrapper 0.12, I installed the w70n501 driver for Centrino. If I remove all the .conf files except the one (ending 2527) that is symlinked to, then ndiswrapper once again works. Hence, the workaround is easy, but the non-technically aware user might well be completely stumped (which is why I have set this bug as "important").
