And in this case, especially given we’re in the freeze,
I don’t think it’s worth changing this at this point and
upsetting other users’ systems. The priority has been 99
for 17 years already with nobody complaining, and I would
prefer to not break existing installations that rely on it.
You can use update-alternatives, as you rightly discovered,
to set the default (and just export EDITOR and/or VISUAL as
normal on Unix).
