I already committed the $(strip ...) fix to SVN, thanks.
But, I'm still not sure about the other change (not using $(DESTDIR), so
the _generated_ Makefile variables are used, and using "local" $(DEB_DESTDIR)
instead). My initial intention was just that, using $(DESTDIR) from the
generated Makefile, because I thought it would be better to use the
information already contained in the generated Makefile. Moreover, it seemed
to work OK for me, but I'm not sure, as the package FTBFS for me (not recent
enough libraries, I think).
So, can you please tell me what's the rationale behind using
$(DEB_DESTDIR)? And, does it work for you with $(DESTDIR) _at all_, or do you
simply _need_ $(DEB_DESTDIR)?
