auth_username_format can be defined globally or specifically for lmtp.
Debian package dovecot-lmtpd recently (1:2.4.1+dfsg1-1 or older,
according to my etckeeper records) added a config specifically for lmtp
that strips hostname part, but then also implicitly drops the global
default lowercasing.

What I would find more intuitive would be to only strip hostname, while
still apply the default lowercasing. I.e. instead of this:

  auth_username_format = %{user | username}

I think that dovecot-lmtpd config snippet should provide this:

  auth_username_format = %{user|username|lower}

Even better would be to also add a comment at the global setting at
/etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-auth.conf that the lmtp setting deviates.
Or perhaps apply the Debian-specific change globally instead?
