To get the original tarball for a new package that is hosted on Github, I recommend just downloading the provided GitHub .tar.gz file and renaming it to match the expected filename. It looks like you created the tarball yourself because it has a .git directory.
I think this would be a headache to fix since you'd need to basically create the repo again. My initial thinking is that it's not worth redoing and it will be fixed when upstream does a new release.
