It *could* look at /proc/net/route (for Legacy IP)
and /proc/net/ipv6_route (for IP) but depending on
iproute2 and using a tool that handles most corner
cases would be fine with me; iproute2 is “good as”
essential for network stuff anyway.

Mind though that 2000::/3 is also a very common
præfix for a default route, not just ::/0…

(And, of course, if it doesn’t find one from the
routing table, the current logic of first one up
could be retained.)
