Apologies; on second look, the root of the problem appears to be an upstream repository management mistake. Specifically, the 'assets' directory is not marked as part of the blender-v4.3-release and the blender-v4.4-release branches both in the source repository at https://projects.blender.org/blender/blender and the "official mirror" at https://github.com/blender/blender . The error was only corrected in blender-v4.5-release , so cloning the 4.3 or 4.4 branch from either repository will result in a source tree that effectively can't do sculpting because of the missing brushes.
