IMHO, "do not truncate the output file" is not a conversion in any possible imaginable way; I would understand more
if it was  "oflag=notrunc"

A lot of the conv options aren't conversions. That's what happens when you have a command with really oddball syntax and 40 years of baggage.

2) what is the use of  "oflag=append" when one forgets
"conv=notrunc"

5.96-5 prints a warning in this case.
