Package: calamares-settings-debian Version: 14.0.1-2 Severity: wishlist X-Debbugs-Cc: [email protected], [email protected]
The timeouts in the modules in the calamares-modules directory of src:calamares-settings-debian have a timeout of 600 seconds. For virtually all modern and even most older systems, this is plenty enough, but when installing Debian or a Debian derivative onto a flash drive, it can be too small. I've multiple times seen timeouts occur (resulting in failed installations) when trying to install Kicksecure (a Debian derivative) onto a cheap USB 3 TeamGroup drive, and recently someone else reported that they were running into the same problem trying to install Kicksecure onto Verbatim SeaGlass drives. (See: https://forums.kicksecure.com/t/warning-prob-with-installing-on-verbatim-seaglass-drives-false-alarm/1359/7) Obviously a system installed to such a drive will experience performance issues when writing to the disk (and possibly when reading too), but some users are still able to meaningfully use such systems. In Kicksecure downstream, we're intending on lengthening these timeouts to 1200 seconds, but thought Debian might want to consider lengthening the timeouts too. We might have other aspects of our ISO that makes steps like bootloader_config take longer than normal, but I assume a similar problem to this could occur with Debian live images if using a really abysmally slow USB drive or other very slow disk connection.
