re-installing python3-gpg and its dependencies solves the issue.

I realized information is not clear enough.

I re-installed/downgraded python3-gpg to version 1.24.2-3 (sid upgraded
it to 2.0.0-2). This solves the issue.

Strange, I do not see any thunderbird dependencies to it.

why should thunderbird depend on a Python library if it's not using any Python integration?

You need libgpgme11t64 in testing or below and libgpgme45 in unstable. Thunderbird is using this shared library if you rely on gpg as an external dependence.

If your setup is working with the downgraded variant then the issue is obviously within the library that is probably providing different symbol names.

Debugging this is a bit harder. You can check if there are already bug reports at the Mozilla Bugzilla BTS. You are for sure not the first person who is experience this if there is a problem with the newer library.
